I must respectfully beg leave to apply to you for to have my husband, Samuel Cave, sailed on the Royal Charlette,
Assigned, being married to him by permission and with the consent of his Excellency the governor.
Mr Hely the principal superintendant, having thought fit to deny his being out of barracks, although his character is most unexceptional for which I beg to refer you to Major Lockyear and from the knowledge your house may have of me during my late husbands life time.
I most earnestly hope you may be pleased to grant this indulgence as he can be spared from his Govt duties as a cooper and being willing to pay the Govt fees.
Trusting you will excuse this liberty and grant me this favour
I have the honour to remain Sir
Your most Obt and very humble servant

In 1873, Ellen Bidder Tombs petitioned for divorce, with James Tombs was listed as respondent. At that time in England, women were only able to obtain a divorce if they proved both infidelity and some other cause, such as cruelty, abandonment for more than two years or incestuous adultery. I do not know whether the divorce was granted. At the time, applications for divorce were expensive and many were rejected. The authorities were also on the look out for people who manufactured evidence of adultery or cruelty in order to be granted a divorce. | Family: F1287
